The terms ‘tree surgeon’ and ‘arborist’ are often used, but do you know what the difference is between the two?
An analogy is sometimes made that a Tree Surgeon and Arborist relationship is similar to that of a medical surgeon and a doctor. The Surgeon performs the complex mechanics, whilst the doctor diagnoses and directs.
The main difference is the type of qualifications and the work they carry out, which differs for a Tree Surgeon and an Arborist.
A Tree Surgeon’s work will often be complex and dangerous and will consist of safely and professionally:
- Tree felling and removal
- Pruning
- Crown lifting, crown reduction and crown thinning, crown clearing and deadwood removal
- Tree pollarding
- Stump grinding and stump removal
- Site clearance and
- Tree planting.
Arborist’s work can consist of everything that a Tree Surgeon does, but crucially also includes:
- Undertaking professional tree inspections
- Understanding and identifying signs of tree failure
- Identifying diseases in trees and providing recommendations for treatment
- Treating trees for damage caused by adverse environmental conditions
- Advice on new planting: which trees and shrubs will thrive with the existing soil type, trees and animal and insect life
- Providing expert management advice and forward planning.
Not all companies offering tree services will be trained tree surgeons or arborists. To ensure that your trees are in the best of health and any work on your property is carried out safely and professionally you need a team with specialist training.
When you are choosing a company to undertake tree work, check that they are members of the Arboricultural Association as this will ensure they have passed rigorous inspections for competency and safety.
At Dave Ford Tree Care every single one of our team members is a professionally trained Arborists, so you really will be putting your trees in the best hands.
